related to the first presidential debate saying governor mitt romney's performance against the president could very well change the entire race. but how important are presidential debates and how much do they really shape the outcome in november? we heard a lot. joining me someone who has done research on polling impact of past debates. larry sabato, director of center for politics at the university of virginia. larry, historically speaking how big of a deal are the first debates really? >> well it can be a dig deal, jenna. of course governor christie was right. he got off message as you know because part of the amusing previous view to a presidential debate is the attempt by both sides to run down their own candidate. about how horrible a debater they are and the other side is so terrific. so governor christie may be committed a behalf by telling the truth. if you look historically, there is a pretty good chance that mitt romney can make up some ground. usually, not always, but usually the challenger to the incumbent just by standing on the stage and doing a credible job, can make up so
. and it was interesting to watch that the president's folks. watch out mitt romney is a strong debater and undersold their own cand date. what do you make about that. >> each side will portray their cand date the underdog . that is not the important question. which cand date will change the equillib rum of the race. we are seeing a equillib rum in the race. and governor has to accomplish more in the debate. but which of the two candidates will change it in his favor. >> or keep it going . dennis and mira, we'll wrap tup and look forward to wednesday night. have a great debate. governor chris christie has his message for the president. >> stop lying mr. president. >> lying? >> yes. >> >> gretchen: he catches people by surprise it doesn't stop not supposed to be in this country. but one state is giving driver's license to illegals. have birthday to zack. i have no idea how to say your name. he is 43. galifianakis. no. y foa limited time! try as much as you like, any way you like! like parmesan crusted simp just $14.99. i'm ryaisabell and i sea fd differently. to predictions -- i think this will come up in the debate. not because mitt romney will bring it up, but because he will be asked about it by one of the moderators. but the romney campaign has shown no signs of pulling back on this. i got a mail -- i live in virginia -- i got a mail at my house for my daughter, who registered to vote a week ago. it repeated all the lines in the welfare at. i think the romney campaign has found a message that it once to -- wants to keep hitting. i think that will come up in the debate. we will hear from obama. initially, we saw this in the polls, this has resonated, their traditional scare seniors about medicare tactics. that has been working really well. so i think obama will bring that up. one thing we will hear is the phrase that romney would end medicare's guarantee, which is a phrase the democrats have liked to use recently. we have raided that half-true for two reasons. one, it is not like it really has a guarantee now. congress can change the medicare benefits any time it wants to. it frequently has. now, romney would change the structure in which people w
much debate between the republican candidate mitt romney and president obama -- we will open up the debate and expand the debate as we so often do on "democracy now, "to a third party candidates. we will be in denver, to and we will have third-party candidates responding to the same questions being put to mitt romney and president obama. we will broadcast democracy now.org and on radio as well. you raised the issue of the critical vote as we traveled through pennsylvania. a whole issue of voter suppression and having been in charlotte, a great civil-rights city, where the students from the historical black college in 1960 set up a lunch counter in to grant them and yet, what do we see today? state after state, efforts to suppress voting rights instead of expanding them. not enough people vote in this country. in pennsylvania, there is legislation now on the books that could disenfranchise between 750,000-1 million people. president obama won by 600,000 boats in pennsylvania last time. this really does determine the election. i don't care who you are for. this will determine the
point of the debate. it's entirely possible that romney will run as any republican challenger ever. pulling on the whites bush '88 come all 56 to 61% of whites range. romani could come right in that range and lose, and i think that is down to -- it should precipitate a conversation in the party. this is the last time anyone will try to do this that is entirely on the back. it's unrealistic when 62 or 63, but the existing collision is so dependent on the community that are uneasy with the change that they are just paralyzed in the intellectual understanding the have to reach out to the hispanics and difficulty they are fighting it in degrees note here at the end. the republican platform in addition to everything else it says about immigration, so any straight defeat does state that provides should be barred from all federal higher education money which means under the republican platform every kid in texas couldn't get a pell grant. so, that is sort of what they are grappling with, versus if you talk to karl rove awarded gillespie and the understanding that we have ways to reach out
